Nature reserve Skårtaryds urskog

A nature reserve with old-growth forest. You can find both lichen, coniferous forests and marshes in the nature reserve Skårtaryds urskog. Both flora and fauna is rich.

The area was made into a reserve in 1996 and is situated by the lake Feresjön. The trees that grow here are coniferous trees and are as old as 200 years old. Lichen grows on trees and stones, and you can find species such as wila. When it comes to birds, you may be lucky enough to see a Western capercaillie or a Black Grouse. There is also a lot of old, dead wood in the forest and there was a fire in 1868 in one part of the reserve, where you can see what a forest looks like after a fire. Mushrooms and berries grow in the Skårtaryds urskog as well.

The state flower of Småland, Linnéa, or in English twinflower, grows along the path. When you visit the reserve, please bear in mind that it is important to respect the nature and make sure that others can experience the nature in the same way, without garbage lying around for example. Keep to the paths and do not destroy any lichens by for example pulling them.
